WDS 2013 Stage

I told y’all last month about how I got up in front of 2800 people at the World Domination Summit and gave a speech, right? It’s when I checked #1 off my bucket list.

Well, several of you have asked what I talked about, so I figured I’d just post the text here for you to read. There might be some references you don’t understand, but I think you’ll probably get the gist of it.

#31 on my Bucket List is to sail around the world.

It’s been a dream of mine for many years now and I’m about a year and a half away
from beginning the trip.

Maybe you’re luckier than me. Maybe you were born knowing how to achieve your dream. But I don’t think Chris [Guillebeau] was & Darren [Rowse] didn’t even know how to bold text & I sure as hell know I wasn’t.

I’m still not sure. I figure it requires a boat, so a few months ago I took the leap & bought a 42′ sailboat.

It’s about twice as big as anything I was used to & after I bought it, it just sat at the marina for a while, because truthfully, I was afraid to death I might crash it into 8 other boats, a couple of trees, and
possibly a restaurant.

Well, one day an old salt named Skipper J walked up to me and asked me what the hell I was doing. I tried to make some excuses but he told me that if he woke up the next day and my boat was still sitting there, he was
going to take a knife and cut all my dock lines.

So I got up early the next morning and started figuring it out. As it turns out, you don’t learn sh*t just sitting at the dock.

People ask me all the time if I’m scared to sail around the world. I kinda look at them like they’re crazy for a second, because of course I’m scared!

There are waves and reefs and storms and pirates and giant squid. I’ve heard all the stories.

Not to mention the fears I have about my family and friends moving on and forgetting about me while I’m gone. And then I look out here at y’all and I’m like ‘these people are doing incredible things and they’re like saving lives and drilling wells in Africa and I’m a living on a boat. I’m not special.’

But that’s how dreams work. This is my dream & this is what I know I’m supposed to be doing & I’m more scared of not doing it and letting the dream die without trying.

Over a hundred people already have joined the story and “sponsored a mile” so I’ll send them postcards and updates along the way. It’s become about much more than just me and my dreams and my bucket list.

Which brings me to what I’m REALLY excited about…creating a curriculum because I have this vision of 3rd grade classes plotting my course on a map and learning about the people and places I encounter along the way. I think that’ll be so cool.

Because, you know, years ago somebody inspired me to lead a life of adventure, and I figure if I can inspire somebody else somewhere along the way to dream big and then live it, well maybe that’ll make the threat of getting eaten by a giant squid almost worth it.
